Youth and Children's Chorus

SLO Youth & Childrens’ Chorus

The Singapore Lyric Opera Youth and Children’s Chorus (SLOYCC) has been an integral member of the SLO family since its inception in 2006. It was expanded in 2019 by the formation of the Youth Chorus.

As a holistic development programme, SLOYCC provides youth and children aged 6 to 25 with music and drama training, exposure to live opera performances, and the chance to perform in showcases and concerts. Through fostering a passion for opera and dramatic singinging among our young performers, we aim to cultivate a chorus of exceptional quality and excellence in Singapore.

Participation in SLOYCC will immerse choristers in the terminology of Western opera and orchestral music, historical context, and the lives of renowned opera composers. Our repertoire spans operas, oratorios, choral masterpieces, and musical theatre from a diverse range of periods, genres, and languages. In addition to musical training, participants will gain behind-the-scenes insight into the mechanics of theatre management, set design, and costume design in Western opera productions.

Training Programme

Our training programme is routinely updated to ensure that it is consistently tailored to the needs and abilities of our young singers:
  • Junior/Beginner Group: Designed for children aged 13 and below who require fundamental musical training, this group emphasises experiential learning and learning through play.
  • Senior Group (The Concert Choir): Geared towards children aged 13 and below who have attained a level of competency in fundamental musical training, this group focuses on advancing their musical skills, acquiring performance repertoire, and experiencing performance opportunities. • Youth Ensemble (Equal Voices – SSAA): Comprising higher voices, this ensemble includes youth singers and selected singers from the Children Chorus, tackling a performance repertoire of advanced difficulty.
  • Youth Ensemble (Mixed Voices – SATB): This elite ensemble engages in a higher level of musicianship with a performance repertoire of elevated complexities.

Be Part Of The SLO Adult Chorus

We welcome individuals of all backgrounds, so long as you possess a passion for Western opera or choral performances. Interested in auditioning? Please click here for more information.

Adult Chorus
Adult chorus candidates will have to prepare two songs that will best show the quality of your singing, one of which should be an opera aria. Art songs and show tunes can also be used for the audition. As you will mostly be performing the classical repertoire, please do not use the following types of music for your audition:

  • Popular music
  • Jazz standards
  • Church hymns and carols

You do not have to memorise your pieces, though it will be advantageous if you can, as most performances will require memorisation. Please bring extra copies of your pieces for the auditioning panel. Please note that SLO does not provide an accompanist for auditions, and you will need to make your own arrangements if you require one.

Indicate your interest in auditioning by filling out this form, and we will be in touch!
